Unbound items include correspondence with Ambrose E. Gonzales re McGowan's work as an assistant traveling agent and correspondent with The State newspaper of Columbia, S.C., and a letter, 12 Sept. 1891 acknowledging his resignation as assistant union ticket agent for the Richmond and Danville Railroad Company. Volume, 1893-1903, contains orders as assistant paymaster in the U.S. Navy, including a copy of his resignation, 30 Mar. 1894, as "Lieut. Commanding the Gattling Gun Corps, Fourth Brigade, S.C.V.T.," receipted bills, business papers, and an undated recipe for "William Aiken Kelly punch," a potent alcoholic refreshment [apparently named for Confederate Army officer W.A. Kelly of First (McCreary's) South Carolina Infantry]. Volume, 1926-1929, chiefly correspondence, memoranda and extracts from letters re the "billboard controversy" during the administration of McGowan as Chief Commissioner of the S.C. State Highway Dept., including letter, 17 Aug. 1926, confidential memorandum to employees of S.C. Highway Dept. re acceptance of gifts from business firms.
